Abbas

The children in this photo were imitating Abbas behind his camera. I thought it was an adorable picture that nicely captured the innocent humor of these children.

This photo was captioned "MALI. Bamako. At sunrise, a fisherman in his boat on the river Niger. 1994." I thought this was a very serene photo and found myself wondering what the boy was thinking as he drifted along the water. Was he content with his job? Did he rely on his boat as an opportunity for escape? Was he alone on long journeys trying to make a living for himself and possibly a family?

Can you describe what about this photo got you to think rather than know what was explicitly happening?

It's the way the boy is looking off into the distance. While he floats along on this tiny boat, the whole world is ahead of him, waiting for him to arrive and settle back in. He seems to have so much possibility in front of him, and yet at the same time, he appears to be so limited in his circumstances. Being on a small boat with no shirt on, Im more likely to assume he's of low income than that he's modest in taste and hot in the weather. It's also the darkness over his body and the light over the land that add an element of mystery.
